As a natural dog food supplement, glucosamine can soothe the symptoms of arthritis and hip dysplasia in dogs. Glucosamine supplements work to restore and regenerate your dog's damaged joints. They also have anti-inflammatory properties. Glucosamine for dogs can be used as a preventative measure in elderly dogs who are at high risk for arthritis.
Liquid glucosamine is the easiest to administer. It can be difficult to encourage dogs to swallow pills; if they are mixed with food, they may become stuck in the teeth and lost. A liquid can be poured directly over food. Liquid glucosamine tastes good to most dogs.

I would like to know if it is advisable to administer glucosamine as a preventative measure for our large dogs?

Nice. The blog name says it all and it's a wonder. My own parents are on this supplement. It comes highly recommended by doctors to keep joints working. I've been recommended it, too, by my tennis coach for faster recovery between sessions, and to reduce the wear and tear on my elbow. Good to know that it works on dogs, too. Thanks for the Luv by the way.

Keep in mind the benefits of a liquid Glucosamine. Many dogs are reluctant to having pills thrown down their throat. If the pill is mixed with the food, it could be chewed and lost in the teeth. A liquid form on the other hand, can be poured directly over the food for a guaranteed acceptance by the dog. Glucosamine has a pleasant taste for most all dogs. Most simply think it's a treat.

Fantastic article. It is encouraging to see that although money comes first we are in fact undertaking research for preventative and or relief solutions for our pets.

Yes, it is safe and actually recommended to start a dog on a glucosamine supplement in middle age, about 5 years old for the average dog, in order to support the joint before the deterioration becomes too advanced.
Remember, by the time you see signs of arthritis the cartilage had already been deteriorating slowly over some time.

Glucosamine is a product that has been shown over and over again through clinical research to be a beneficial tool for your pets health. It has been on the market long enough for the pros and cons to be discussed and hashed out. The outcome was on the good side.

Thanks for the post.

Most glucosamine is derived from shellfish - if you have shellfish allergies you should probably avoid glucosamine derived from shellfish.
